A glut is right! There is rarely a patient who comes to my office who is NOT on an antidepressant for something or other. Most of the time, the medication was prescribed by a primary care doctor. The great majority of these patients have been on these meds (many of which cause significant weight gain, by the way) for many years.
Having a sister who is an expert psychiatrist has made me acutely aware of the skills needed to correctly diagnose disorders that warrant treatment with these powerful meds. We should not be taking them because we simply feel blue now and then or because we are upset about a life event that will eventually fade with time.
If you have been put on an antidepressant and you are not sure why, please revisit this with your physician. If you are suffering from true clinical depression, I would advise that medical treatment be supervised by a psychiatrist.
